TOTM is a monomer softener whose high molecular weight makes it less mobile than DOP and many alternative softeners. DOTP is classified as a non-orthophthalate, which differs from DOP in terms of animaltoxicology and metabolism.
The high molecular weight of TOTM has an advantage over DOTP due
to the phenomenon of stress cracking in joints or other rigid components that interface with flexible PVC components such as pipes. Stress cracking due to plasticizer migration to the interface occurs slower with TOTM than with DOTP.
Although DOTP may cause wear more than TOTM, it resists wear better than other alternative softeners and even better than DOP. TOTM also works better in this field by polymer softeners.
